49ers Stadium: How "binding" is "binding"? Really?

Dear Santa Clarans,

Last night in the City Council meeting, the Council voted to create Resolutions for Council which will order the $114M stadium subsidy to a vote on June 8th. Good news...

...except for the fact that the so-called "binding" vote is based on a document not only greatly deficient - but in fact, not even binding itself.

Note that the 49ers "bought-and-paid-for" initiative was stuck in our faces with the Term Sheet of June 2, 2009, pasted onto it.

But if one goes to pages 2 and 3 of the Term Sheet itself, one finds that both the City and the San Francisco 49ers declare that document to be non-binding.

So: What is the binding document which will tell Santa Clarans exactly what our elected leaders are promising the 49ers? When will THAT be complete?

That would be the Disposition and Development Agreement, or DDA.

And that's due to be complete only on or about July 13th - 35 days AFTER that election.

This is why our group urged City Council last night to place the "49ers-very-own" initiative on our ballot on November 2nd - not on June 8th - so that Santa Clarans would have a firm agreement on which to vote. We stand by that - but we're not surprised that the massive stadium subsidy train is again being waved through the station at maximum speed.

Santa Clarans, we encourage you to make your objections known to the City Council and to the Mayor.

For this expenditure of $114,000,000 of public money, Santa Clarans surely deserve better.

Thanks for all of your support,
Bill Bailey, Treasurer

Whether one is for the stadium or not, the idea that public funds should not be used to build a publically owned structure that will earn money for the public is just bizarre. Regardless to the individual conditions, this will be our stadium. Why wouldn't we want to put up the money for it if we expect to profit from it? Sheeze.

The problem is that despite the enormous investment and risk, the City of Santa Clara DOESN'T profit. In fact, the city's own analysis shows that $67,000,000 will be diverted from the City's General Fund if this project goes forward. Personally, I agree that it might be worth spending public on a project that would be profitable to the city, but a stadium is not such a project,

The Yorks' have the money, they just dont want to spend it! Listen, their are no better fans then my family! Having been major season ticket holders for over 30 years! My father evan belonged to the NFL Alumni Assc. for many years before his death in 2006.They evan named a day after my father for all his contributions to kids programs. Each year a special needs child is a recepiant of this program. Even though I live in Saratoga not in Santa Clara,(I was born in S.F. then are family moved to Santa Clara,Fairway Glen, then settled in Saratoga)I still feel the team should stay in S.F! My father would not approve of monies being used for pro-SPORTS teams owned by the wealthy when our economy is the way that it is! People who want the team moved do so for selfish reasons! Like not wanting to drive so far for a game, no other reason! I belonged to the same booster club as my parents after my father died, The"Santa Clara Goldrushers", but they didnt like the fact that I was against the move and was forced out by cold shouldering! I can tell you that from the mouth of Jed York himself, the real reason for the move is to be closer to the 49er facility. Apparently its a pain to have to travel for the "higher ups" to have to drive that far and bring all the food and equipment for the players etc, etc! When I asked Jed about the people who will be losing their jobs who work the stadium now, he had nothing to say. Also nothing to say about the contractors they will bring from out of state (not local contractors)to build the stadium, he had nothing to say. I'm with you guys, I will display one of your "NO ON J" signs in my yard to support you if you let me know were to get one. And if there is any way I can help,(door to door stuff)or whatever let me know! Marti Foster, true 49er fan!
